Having the option of flexible working hours, and a more flexible training program, is missing in Cardiology. It is currently lagging behind specialties such as general surgery.

This may lead to unnecessary time taken off as there is no alternative if an interruption to training or work needs to be made, and likely contributes to poorer work life balance and burnout.

Areas we plan to target:

1.

The ability to job share during training, fellowships or in public appointments. This is successfully in place in other specialties, such as paediatrics.

2.

Flexibility of training programs - currently of more than 7 weeks need to be taken off from work, this year will not contribute to training time. This should not be the case, and is not mirrored in other specialties.

3.

There are no provisions currently for maternity leave during cardiology training, which need to be developed.
