The Facts

Fig. 1

Breakdown of female representation across different medical specialties.

There is a notable decline in female representation as trainees progress towards senior cardiology positions, particularly within the field of interventional cardiology (Burgess et al, JACC 2018, DOI: 10.1016/j.jacc.2018.08.2198).

Fig. 2

Gender differences in survival after ST-elevation myocardial infarction.

There are substantial gender differences in outcomes of ST-elevation myocardial infarction (Khan et al, MJA 2018, doi: 10.5694/mja17.01109), along with considerable differences in cardiovascular pathology. This warrants further research and will become part of the focus of this group.

Percentage mortality after STEMI in men and women

Women are underrepresented amongst cardiologists, particularly in senior positions, and this may be partly responsible for the relative paucity of knowledge of cardiovascular pathology seen more commonly in women. Further research and advocacy in both of these areas is required.
